Welcome to the FUMC Altus Youth Page!
We are a group of 7th-12th graders walking together through life, learning about Love, and spreading some hope in the world!
We are devoted to loving God, neighbor, and self through faith, works, and community. Doubts, questions, and fears are met with grace here as we all learn what it means to participate in the story of God’s love in the world.
Our regular schedule is not just a list of tasks or events, but times when we gather as imperfect, but called children of God to practice faith, works, and community. Here is a general overview of what we do:
Worship: on Sunday mornings many youth attend the contemporary worship service called “The Gathering” at 9:15 downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. There are two other (more traditional) worship services that youth are welcome to attend too! One at 8:15am and the other at 10:30.
Sunday School: After, worship with the whole congregation in the Gathering, we meet upstairs in the youth area for from 10:30-11:30am for warm drinks, donuts, a lesson, and some time to fellowship together.
Sunday Youth Lunches: Once a month (starting in Fall 2019) youth meet at 11:45ish to eat together! Each month different members of the congregation make food and hang out with us. Then, we have some fun together for an hour or two–games, activities, learning life skills, and praying together.
Micah 6:8 Wednesdays: During the school year, Wednesday nights are focused on breaking bread together in fellowship as well as service to the local community. Food is served to anyone in the congregation ($7 per person) starting at 5:00 (come and go as needed) and classes for all ages begin immediately afterwards. We believe that we are called to “seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly” with God (Micah 6:8) and the more that we reach out to the poor, the hungry, and the lonely, the closer earth comes to the Kingdom of God. With this in mind, youth meet after dinner at 6:30 every Wednesday for a local service project. Transportation will be provided for projects that are off-site. See semester schedule or email firstname.lastname@example.org for a detailed list of events!
Lunch Bunch: Every week during the school year, youth director Morgan Mitchell visits either the Altus Junior High or High School to eat with students. Youth are invited to send their food/drink order the night before, bring money to lunch, and sit together for a time of fellowship during the school day!
First Priority Club: Every Thursday at the High School students from churches all over town meet over the lunch hour. We eat together, have devotionals, and share our stories–anyone is welcome to join us. Once per month food is provided by the First Baptist and First United Methodist Churches.
Summer Camps and Mission Trips: Every summer students are invited to attend church camps! Disciple camp is for students going into 6th-8th grade at the Heart of the Hills campground in Welling, Oklahoma. Dayspring camp is for students going into 9th grade-freshman year of college. Youth Force is a service project camp for students going into 7th grade through any year of college and it is hosted in a different city each year. (Youth Force 2020 will be in Ardmore, Oklahoma). Every Spring Break students go on a mission trip as well! Connect with us for more detailed information.
Scholarships: Together we do a lot of things and go a lot of places! When students serve at various specified events (Wednesday nights, for example) they have a chance to earn some credit called “Mission Bucks” that can help ease the cost of upcoming activities and trips. However, even with that, please never hesitate to request some help so that we can make sure your student is involved!
