First United Methodist Church is committed to reaching people with the Gospel, growing devoted followers of Christ, and impacting the community with the love of God. We are passionate about our community, it’s people, our heritage and history. We are humbled and thankful to be known as “the church that helps people”.
Our church was first started back in 1887 by a Methodist Circuit Rider, Rev. J. T. Hosmer, in the half-dugout home of Mr. John McClearen.
Originally the church was located at Frazier, but moved to Altus after Bitter Creek flooded in 1891.
Our sanctuary was built in it’s current location in 1921. With it’s Romanesque dome hovering high over the sanctuary floor, it’s horseshoe balcony, and timeless design- we count ourselves blessed to be the custodians of this wonderful and sacred facility. Of particular beauty are the priceless stained glass windows surrounding the sanctuary. Many exist in loving memory of our now departed brothers and sisters.
In 1948, the Educational Wing was added to the south end of the sanctuary to meet the needs of a growing church. We continue to rely upon this space today, where you’ll find numerous spaces for things like music education and practice, children’s activities, and educational classrooms. There is even a small theatre for children to view movies and multimedia educational programs.
Striving to meet the needs of an expanding and diverse community, the Family Life Center was built in 2000. This expansive two-story facility includes a large gathering area and gymnasium, a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, Main Church Office Complex, Preschool Area, six Discipleship Classrooms, and a full service nursery. Naturally- there are plenty of well equipped and easily accessible restrooms!
Numerous programs such as “Mother’s Day Out”, “Kids Club”, Wednesday evening WOW dinners, along with many other church-wide and community events take place in this excellent facility.
First United Methodist Church of Altus is a member of the Oklahoma Conference of United Methodist Churches.
